The Italian Greyhound (in Italian: piccolo levriero italiano) is a small breed of dog; of the sighthound type, sometimes nicknamed the "IG" or "Iggy", with a bloodline extending back over 2,000 years. They are the smallest of the sighthound family. The IG is an alert, playful, and highly affectionate toy companion. They make decorative couch dogs, but at heart they are flash-and-dash coursing hounds with an instinct for pursuit. Standing ideally 13-15 inches at the shoulder, they present the sleek, curving lines common to all coursing hounds. Dishtingushing features are the long, fine-boned legs. A short-coat low-fat breed, Ig's require extra care in cold weather. Bred for centuries to be doting companions and jesters, these high-stepping charmers refuse to be ignored.
